Lodge 12-inch Cast Iron Pan – My everyday go to, most used pan. I keep it on the stovetop because I use it so often there is no point in putting it away. I keep it nicely oiled and it is better than any non-stick pan I’ve ever had. It gives the best sear and I am happy knowing there are no weird chemicals or coating potentially going into our family’s food. The size is perfect for our large family. This is probably my number one staple piece of equipment in the kitchen.

Tempered Glass Lid for Lodge 12-inch Pan – It’s so handy having a lid for my cast iron pan to lock in the heat when I want to focus on steaming or cooking through foods after a good sear. Also so nice for keeping food warm if you need to let it sit for awhile. I was getting weary of ripping off sheets of tinfoil for this purpose – what a waste!

Lodge Pan Scapers (2 pack) – Once you invest in cast iron you will want to care for it properly. This includes not using soap or abrasive scrapers (you don’t want to lose your beautiful pan seasoning!). These scrapers are the best way I’ve found to clean my pan, I use them everyday and they are gentle enough they don’t scrape off the seasoning I’ve built up on my pan. A must have!!

Large Dutch Oven – I love having a 6-8 quart size dutch oven. It makes the most amazing vessel for homemade sourdough bread, and is awesome for slowly braised meat like pulled pork, balsamic beef dip, and stew. The Amazon Basics line is very reasonably priced and comes in several beautiful colours.

USA Pan Half Sheet Pan (13×18″) – this is my go to size of sheet pan, perfect for roasting vegetables, sheet pan meals, baking cookies, etc. USA Pan is known for it’s exceptional quality – it is made of warp resistant aluminized steel and has a special fluted surface which ensures nothing will stick to it!

9×13″ baking pans with lids, 2 pack – 9×13″ pans are one of my most used pans. Perfect for brownies, bars, and cakes, as well as savoury dishes like roasted meat or vegetables. I love that these pans come with lids – perfect for freezing or refrigerating your food in or taking it to share somewhere! I couldn’t find my exact pans linked on amazon (because they are several years old!), but these are very similar with great reviews!

Lemon/Lime Squeezer – I’ve been through 2 or 3 other designs of lemon juicers, all which amounted in a lot of frustration. This is the ultimate lemon and lime juicer, it works like dream, catches all the seeds, and gets the maximum amount of juice out of your lemons and limes with a single press. And the sturdy metal design means its not going to break after a few uses (like the other ones I’ve tried).

Squeeze Bottles – These are so handy to have on hand for homemade condiments, like chipotle aioli! It’s nice not to have to grab a spoon every time you want to use it – you’ll have less waste and it’ll look prettier too! This link has a set of 2 six ounce bottles, or one larger 12 ounce bottle depending on what you think you’d use more! I LOVE mine!!

Stainless Steel Kitchen Scale – I’ve had this in my kitchen for years now. I love the retro style so it is not only functional but also a cute decor piece on my counter. The stainless steel bowl is easy to take on and off and is dishwasher safe – a must for me! I love that this is a mechanical scale so there are no batteries needed and it is super straightforward and easy to use. This has been a great addition to my kitchen, especially for recipes where only weighted measurments are given.

French Rolling Pin – My brother talked me into getting one of these years ago and I like it SOOO much better than the conventional kind with handles. This way nothing gets caught in the dip between the pin and the handles and you have a longer smooth continuous surface area to roll out large dough consistently. This is my only rolling pin, I’ve had it for years!

Anchor 3 Piece Glass Measuring Cups – These are a kitchen staple for liquid measuring. Classic, sturdy, reliable. I much prefer glass to plastic so I can store things longer in the fridge and not worry about chemicals leeching in from the plastic.

Victorinox Paring Knife – My favourite little knife to peel and chop apples and other small fruits and veggies. It’s incredibly sharp and easy to use and quickly becoming my go to knife.

J.A. Henckels 3 piece knife starter set – While I would love a full set of Cutco knives, the budget just won’t allow it. In the meantime, these J.A. Henckels are a great starting place. I love these 3 sizes of knives, they are very versatile and sharp and pretty much all you need for your home cooking tasks. They’ve been my go to knives for 10+ years now!

Ikea Garlic Press – This is the BEST garlic press I have ever used. It works so well because the garlic holding area is nice and deep so you don’t get the bulb squishing back out towards you when you press. It’s well made with sturdy stainless steel so I have no doubt it will be a workhorse for me for many years to come. I had given up on garlic presses before finding this one! (Thanks Leanna for the recommendation a few years ago!)

Microplane Zester – This little tool is incredibly sharp and makes quick and easy work zesting lemons, limes, oranges, grating fresh parmesan cheese, nutmeg, chocolate shavings, garlic cloves, etc. One of the ultimate tools for garnishing. I’ve had it for over 10 years and it’s as sharp as ever!

Pepper Mill – Fresh ground pepper has SO much more flavour than pre-ground. I love the size, simplicity, and wood construction of this mill, I’ve had it since I first got married (12+ years ago) and it’s still going strong!

12-inch Silicone Tongs – have 2 of these and they get used on the daily, I could probably use another set. I love the long length for dipping down into my instant pot or deep stock pots and the silicone tips protect my cookware from getting scratched. They’re great for serving salads as well! It’s handy for storage that they lock shut and I haven’t had any issues with the spring loading malfunctioning like the common plain stainless steel tongs that seem to never work.

Whirley Pop Stainless Steel Popcorn Maker – This thing is a dream come true. We use it several times a week, every week. It makes the BEST popcorn, no joke. Make sure you get the stainless steel model as the pot has a thicker bottom and the gears are made of metal, instead of plastic. This makes for a much more durable and even cooking popcorn maker. Popcorn is one of the most budget friendly and nutritious snacks there is and I can’t imagine life without it.

9 inch tart pan with removable bottom – I actually found mine at Winner’s years ago, but this pan serves as a great addition to my kitchen. I can make beautiful quiche and show-stopping tarts and not worry about the crust sticking in the bottom or corners of the pan since the bottom pops up and out with ease. It makes for a beautiful fluted crust shape.

Set of 4 oven safe Ramekins РThese are such versatile dishes to have. They are oven safe so they are perfect for baking souffl̩s, chocolate lava cakes, extra chocolate tart filling, even french onion soup! They also double as handy small dishes for dips and sides. They are microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.

Set of 4 Anchor 6-ounce glass ramekins/custard cups – These are the perfect little bowls for serving small single serve desserts like homemade custard or trifle, for whisking up a quick small sauce or dressing, or for serving dips like Au Jus with Balsamic Beef Dip or Roasted Garlic Aioli with Philly Cheesesteaks. I get a lot of use out of them!

Dinnerware

Duralex (Made in France) Clear Drinking Glasses – This set was recommenced by Deb from Smiiten Kitchen in one of her yearly favourite things lists. I trust her unreservedly and was in need of a good drinking glass set so I took the plunge. These cups are made in France and have been manufactured since 1945. They are the very cups used in French children’s schools precisely because they are so durable, sturdy, chip resistant. They’re a classic and I have not been disappointed by the least. If you’re in need of a new glass set, this is THE one to buy. I love the 3 sizes, we use them all for specific purposes.

J.A. Henckels 45-piece Flatware Set – Cottage – This is the cutlery set we’ve had for over 10 years and we are partial to it. Anytime I’ve went out and bought a few more forks or spoons in a different style we always gravitate back to these. They just have the perfect weight and feel with a timeless look. They wash amazingly well and still hold there shine to this day.

Favourite Small Kitchen Appliances

Instant Pot (8 Quart) – This is my most used kitchen appliance, I am obsessed with this thing! It saves me so much time and hassle in the kitchen and serves so many purposes that I think it is definitely worth the purchase. My favourite things to make are hard boiled eggs, rice, whole chickens, broth, pulled beef and pork, chili, soups, ribs, mac’n’cheese…. the list goes on!

Cuisinart 14-cup Food Processor– I have a KitchenAid food processor that is over 10 years old (and still going strong), that I love. However, reading the reviews and hearing feedback from friends who have purchased the newer models, it seems they aren’t made like they used to! I have heard rave reviews of the current Cuisinart food processor, both from food bloggers I trust and friends I personally know that have one, so this is the model I will recommend. It comes with a grating and slicing blade, as well as the usual spinning blade for blending. I use my food processor for making hummus, lara bars, almond flour, slicing scalloped potatoes, shredding cheese, and making cashew cream in a matter of seconds! I love the large capacity, would not want it any smaller.

Breadman Professional Breadmaker This has been my breadmaker for over 4 years and I love it, I use it every week! It is programmable up to 15 hours in advance, makes up to a 2lb loaf, and has 14 cooking functions which cover pretty much anything you’d want to do with a breadmaker (there’s even a jam function)! I love it for making my whole wheat bread, but it’s also handy for making dough for cinnamon buns and french bread, completely hands off! I’m really pleased with the quality and durability of this machine thus far.

NutriBullet – Sometimes it’s not practical to lug out the big food processor when I just want to make myself a smoothie, or puree a small batch of something. I’ve had my NutriBullet for several years now and it has served me very well – too many smoothies to count!

Immersion Blender – I can’t imagine going through the hassle of transporting hot chunky soup in small batches to a blender to puree – what a hassle! I absolutely adore my immersion blender when it comes to blending soups. It could not be easier, you just stick it in the soup and whiz away. Just make sure the blade is fully immersed before blending and while blending or you’ll have a hot mess, quite literally… everywhere! 😉

George Foreman Evolve 3 in 1 Multi Plate Waffle Grill– My sweet hubby and kids picked this out for me for Mother’s Day a few years back (I have an older model), and I have gotten so much use out of it! I think it’s safe to say the rest of the fam enjoys it as well 🙂 I love that it doubles as a grill for meat and paninis, as well as a waffle grill with interchangeable plates. Less small appliances to keep in my tiny kitchen!

Hamilton Beach 10 Quart Slow Cooker – I must admit now that I have my Instant Pot, I almost never use a slow cooker anymore. However, if you prefer a slow cooker – this is a fantastic option! It is an extra large capacity at 10 quarts, so you can make pretty much any cut or meat, turkey, or other large batch meals for potlucks and backyard barbecues. It has over 1000 five star reviews on Amazon, so you know it’s a winner!

Ankarsrum Original Mixer (Assistant), Pearl Blue – This is by no means a must have due to the hefty price tag, but if you’re looking to invest in the ultimate stand mixer, look no further! My sweet husband picked this out for me after a lot of research when I had asked him for a Kitchen Aid mixer several years ago for Christmas. He informed me the Ankarsrum was the far superior choice (lol!), and I think he’s right. It is renown for it’s ability to knead huge batches of dough effortlessly among its other features (my personal favourite feature is the self-scraping bowl spatula). There are all sorts of attachments available to purchase separately as well (see below), which makes this stand mixer quite the multi-tasker. If you are an avid baker and cook in large batches this is definitely the mixer for you! Plus it’s just gorgeous to look at, am I right? (It comes in several stunning colours!)

Ankarsrum Deluxe Add-on Package – Here is an all in one set of the most popular Ankarsrum attachments, another gift my husband got for me (he’s a saint, am I right?!). You may not need or want all of them so take a look and you can search for the individual items you think you’d use most instead. My favourite attachment is the blender, it is super powerful! I think the sausage maker would be fabulous if you’re into that kind of thing as well. I haven’t dabbled in it as of yet…

Specialty Ingredients

Yupik Coconut Sugar – Coconut sugar is my go to dry sweetener. It has about half as high of an impact on the Glycemic Index (how much it spikes your blood sugar) compared with table sugar, and contains many beneficial nutrients derived from the coconut palm. I don’t notice any sacrifice in taste or texture when I use coconut sugar in my baking. This brand is a great price and they have excellent customer service. One time I received a bag that had ripped open in the box and spilled everywhere and they sent a new one out right away, no questions asked.

Almond Flour – This is my favourite gluten free flour for baking. It is low in carbs and high in protein and fats, making it a great choice for low carb baking. This almond flour is made from finely milled blanched almonds which provides the optimal texture for baking. The Yupik brand has been the most reliable for baking ingredients on Amazon, it is consistently very good quality!

Coconut flour – a good stabilizing gluten free flour used in conjunction with other gluten free flours that helps provide the perfect texture to your baked goods! It is nut free and packed with fibre and natural sweetness. Be aware that coconut flour absorbs a lot of moisture so it does not substitute 1:1 with other flours. Use in recipes already formulated with it!

Sprouted Spelt Flour – I like using sprouted flour when I’m not using the sourdough method because, similarly to sourdough, the sprouting process breaks down the starch in the grains lowering the carb count and glycemic index. Sprouting also results in higher nutrient content and is easier to digest (even gluten intolerant people can often tolerate sprouted wheat).

Gluten Free Old Fashioned Oats – When baking for someone who is Celiac or gluten intolerant, it is important to make sure your oats are certified gluten free to make sure there is no cross contamination in the product. Bob’s Red Mill is a reliable brand for gluten free oats, they are top notch quality and taste great!

Unsweetened Coconut Flakes – I used to always buy sweetened shredded coconut for baking recipes until I looked at the label one day and realized there was a ton of added sugar. I switched to unsweetened coconut flakes and noticed absolutely no difference in terms of taste. This has become a staple ingredient for me in my no bake bites, super seed bars, and other baking recipes. Love it! I have found the Yupik brand on Amazon to be the best quality and most affordable option for baking ingredients.

Organic Black Chia Seeds– I have fallen in love with these seeds for their nutritional benefits. They are packed with protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. If you want to learn more about them, here’s a great article. They also provide a beautiful pop of colour and pleasing crunch which makes them one of my go to garnishes. I love to load them up in my super seed bars and they’re also great in smoothies. I buy the Kirkland brand at Costco. Now you can also get it on Amazon if you do not live near Costco!

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds – A great alternative to nuts, these are one of my favourite additions to granola bars, oatmeal, trail mix, etc. Pumpkin seeds are not only delicious, but also a great source of protein, healthy fat, and iron!

Ground Flaxseed – Flaxseed is an excellent source of protein, fibre, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. This superfood is the perfect binding addition to your granola bars and baking, and is also a known milk booster for my fellow nursing mamas! Make sure to use ground flaxseed rather than whole, so you get the maximum absorption of all its amazing nutrients!

Nutritional Yeast – You’ll hear me talk about this a lot, and that’s because I put this stuff on just about everything! Nutritional Yeast is high in B12 vitamins (which boost your mood and give you energy), as well as protein. It is low in calories and carbohydrates and has a delicious salty/savoury flavour. It is a great dairy free substitute to give that “cheesy” flavour to your dishes. I love sprinkling it on my pasta, omelettes, salads, soup, etc. Think of it as a superfood replacement for your typical “shaker” parmesan cheese.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Bragg’s is the most reliable brand of apple cider vinegar I’ve found. I love that it is organic and made “with the mother” so you’re getting all the benefits of associated with these strand-like chains of protein molecules. It’s great for salad dressings, homemade sauces, and bone broth. It’s also excellent for adding to soaked nuts and grains as it aids in the sprouting process. This might be TMI but apple cider vinegar is my number one natural method to removing warts in my children as well!!! This stuff is potent 🙂

Coconut Aminos – This is an excellent healthy substitute for soy sauce. It is gluten free, soy free, much lower in sodium than soy sauce, and packed with amino acids and active enzymes. And it tastes delicious, very similar to soy sauce.

Gluten Free Worcestershire Sauce – Worcestershire sauce is a staple ingredient for me for adding flavour to all sorts of soups, sauces, and meat dishes. I didn’t even realizes that the brand I was using had gluten in it, but thankfully gluten free Worcestershire sauce is readily available! Look for the ingredients to list “distilled vinegar” rather than “malt vinegar” to ensure it is gluten free, like this one from French’s.

French’s Dijon Mustard – Dijon mustard is one of my go to flavour boosters for sauces, marinades, salad dressing, and stew. It’s also delicious on a sandwich or with charcuterie. It gives that hit of acidic, tangy, slighly spicy flavour to really round out your dish. A must have pantry staple!

Better Than Bouillon Organic Chicken Base– When you don’t have homemade bone broth on hand, this is the next best thing. I love that the organic bouillon is reduced sodium so it’s not so overpoweringly salty. This is super handy to have on hand when recipes call for small amounts of chicken broth, or if you just want to boost the flavour of your bone broth soups. I get mine at Costco, but you can also order it online from Amazon.

Natural Peanut Butter – This is a staple in our house, I love that the only ingredient is peanuts! We use it on toast and pancakes, as a dip for apples, in smoothies, in baking… it’s absolutely delicious! Packed with healthy fats and protein with no added sugar, natural peanut butter is excellent choice for nutrient dense snacks.

Powdered Peanut Butter – Don’t get me wrong, I still love natural peanut butter and use it regularly, but this is a great healthy peanut butter substitute when you want that peanut butter flavour without all the calories and fat. It has 90% less calories than regular peanut butter and 6g protein per serving. This brand is also sugar free. I like to add it to smoothies, oatmeal, and mixed with collagen and almond milk fo dip apple slices in.

Thai Kitchen Coconut Milk– This is my go to brand for making whipped coconut cream. The other brands just don’t seem to be as creamy or solidify when refrigerated – such a disappointment when you open the can in the morning ready to whip up some cream. This brand has never failed me!

Coconut Oil – I go through this stuff pretty quickly! It’s my go to oil for sautéing since it is high heat safe (as opposed to olive oil), I use it in my favourite brownie recipe, no bake energy bites, stovetop popcorn, and even for beauty purposes (it is the BEST eye makeup remover)!

Ghee– Clarified Butter. This is the best lactose free substitute for butter because it is made with butter so you get the same rich buttery flavour without the dairy. It’s also a valuable Source of fat soluble Vitamins A, D, E, and K. How cool is that?!

Collagen Peptides – I use this everyday and absolutely love the health benefits it provides for my hair, skin, and nails. It’s also a great way to up my protein intake and keep me full for longer. I have whole post on Collagen if you’re interested in learning more about it.

Dairy-Free Chocolate Chips– I love the Kirkland chocolate chips because they are dairy free and they taste just as good (if not better) than the most popular brand. If I’m making a small batch of something or really want to watch my sugar I’ll spring for a more expensive dark chocolate chip or 70-85% dark chocolate chopped up, but for my everyday baking I prefer something affordable like these.

Espresso Powder – this is my favourite trick to make any of my chocolate recipes have a super rich, deep chocolate flavour, as per Ina Garten’s advice, I add espresso powder! It really makes my brownies absolutely perfect. I add it to chocolate ganache, my fav choco-latte peanut butter banana smoothie, and any chocolate themed baking.

Raw Unsalted Cashews – These are awesome for making homemade cashew cream. You want to use raw, unsalted cashews for the best tasting cream. Yupik has been a very reliable brand for me, I have never been disappointed with one of their products. They’ve always been fresh and reasonably priced!

Pink Himalayan Salt – I love that this salt is free from additives and contains 84 trace minerals, many of which we are unlikely to get from any other food source. Plus it tastes great! I use it in place of table salt in all of my recipes.

Kirkland Organic No-Salt Seasoning – This is one of the only seasoning blends I keep on hand. It super versatile and packs a big punch of flavour. It is a dupe for the Trader Joe’s 21 Spice Seasoning blend I fell in love with but cannot easily/affordably find here in Canada. I put it on roasted meats and vegetables, in meatballs and burger patties, in soups and sauces… anywhere I want to add a nice herby garlic-y flavour. Look for it at your local Costco, or you can purchase if off of Amazon.

Coffee Must Haves

Cuisinart 14-Cup Coffee Maker – Our everyday coffee maker and it’s great for a crowd with it’s 14 cup carafe. Simple, reliable, and affordable. I would encourage you to compare the price of this amazon link with what you can find at Costco and see which is cheaper before you purchase! I personally got mine from Costco.

Cuisinart 18-Cup Burr Mill – I love this coffee grinder for it’s large capacity and Burr grinding method, which doesn’t heat the beans and results in smoother tasting coffee. Mmmmm!

AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker – When I just want a single cup of coffee this is my go to coffee maker. It’s completely off grid which makes is an awesome option for travel and camping as well. And let me tell you, it makes the most delicious cup of coffee in my opinion! It’s pretty much the ultimate frugal option for an espresso maker, you really can’t beat it. We used to live off-grid in a log cabin we designed and built ourselves (long, fun story) and used this exclusively to make our coffee at the time. I kinda miss those days…

AeroPress filters – You will need these for making coffee in your AeroPress!

Java Jug – This is a companion product for the AeroPress. It is awesome for making and storing multiple or larger servings of coffee. It also is a great travel carrying case for the AeroPress as it’s designed to hold all the parts compactly inside. We use it on the daily. If you’re an avid AeroPress user this is a must have!

Kicking Horse Kick Ass Dark Roast Whole Bean Coffee – this is our favourite coffee (besides Black Rifle Coffee, of course, but we can’t afford to drink it on a regular basis). It often goes on sale for $9.99/bag and that’s when we stock up. It’s on sale at the time of writing this so you’ll just have to check the link to see what the current price is. Good, strong, clean tasting coffee makes allllll the difference, trust me!

My At Home Fitness Favs

NutraPhase Clean BCAA, Raspberry Lemonade Flavour – BCAA’s (branch chain amino acids) are by no means necessary but they do aid in reducing fatigue, and increasing muscular endurance and growth. I like this brand because it has no artificial colours, flavours, or sweeteners, and is gluten and dairy free. Many of the mainstream brands on the market are filled with unnecessary filler ingredients and excess sugar. I like to sip on BCAA’s with a squeeze of fresh lemon and plenty of ice during my workouts to help keep me fuelled and improve my recovery time (plus they taste really good!). Please note that BCAA’s are not recommended during pregnancy/breastfeeding so I do not take them during that time (yep, it’s been awhile!).

Peach Bands Resistance Bands Set – These latex resistance bands come in 4 levels of resistance and are perfect for muscle activation during warm-up, adding resistance to weighted exercises, or exercise on the go (they are very easy to take anywhere!). Once you have been using them for awhile, you will be ready to graduate to a thicker fabric, style hip circle for glute activation (see following item), but these will keep you going for a long time! The lighter resistance bands are great for upper body exercises.

Advanced Resistance Band Set – This set of 3 resistance bands are made of thick cotton polyester elastic material with non slip grips on the inside so they will not slip or roll up during exercise. The tension is much more challenging than the latex bands above so I only recommend these to those who are starting to feel the latex bands aren’t challenging enough anymore. It took me a few years of working out to graduate to this set and I love it! They are great quality and I love the more challenging resistance level.

Door Anchored Resistance Band Set – This set comes with a door anchor that simply catches behind a closed door so it stays secure while you exercise. It also has to sturdy handles that attach to the bands (and all the attachments are sturdy metal D clips). This type of resistance bands is great for overhead back exercises like face pulls and pull-downs (great for ladies like me who cannot do real pull-ups!). It also comes with ankle straps so you can do leg work like cable kickbacks as well. You can combine the resistance levels to get a higher weight of resistance, making this set a set that will last you as far advanced as you could need. Easy to travel with as well!

3-5-8lb Dumbbell Weight Set – This is a great set for a beginner just getting started and will also be great for weighted cardio and more advanced upper body moves even for experienced exercisers. I like that it comes with a stand, great for storage!

Rubber Encased Hex Dumbbells – For your heavier weights, I would suggest looking for a set second hand to save some money, or shopping around for sales at your local sports store as the prices on Amazon seem pretty high. I like to look for closer to $1/pound as a great deal. The rubber encased hex is a great design because it protects your floors and mat from damage as you set down the heavy weights over and over again. I like to have a set of two of 15, 20, and 25 pounds. These weight sets will take you a long ways in your fitness progress before you might eventually need to upgrade to a full barbell set!

Trigger Point Performance The Grid Revolutionary Foam Roller – This is by no means something you NEED, but after my husband ordered this for himself, I must admit I have found it very helpful! Be prepared, foam rolling is painful – basically you are rolling against your sore muscles so of course it is going to be uncomfortable! However, I have found my recovery time to be significantly quicker when I foam roll. Without it, I could be sore for days after an intense leg workout, but with foam rolling, I am virtually pain free the next day after rolling it out. Pretty amazing results!

Interlocking Foam Floor Tiles – Having a mat is so much easier on my joints for exercising, and it’s nice to have an easy to clean surface that you don’t have to worry about damaging underfoot! I currently use a traditional yoga mat, however I have found it to be a nuisance for workouts with running shoes (which I always wear) as the mat rips and tears to shreds. After doing some research, I will be going with this type of system when I repurchase as it has excellent reviews for durability and covers a greater surface area. Many of the reviewers said that it stayed in place on concrete floors, but on carpet or laminate you would want a non-skid mat underneath to keep it in place, so keep that in mind!
